Brazil bans mobile phones in schools

gl. Brazilian President Inácio Lula da Silva has signed a law banning the use of mobile phones in schools. The ban affects public and private schools at primary and secondary school level and applies both during lessons and breaks. Lula explained that this measure is absolutely necessary because man is born to live in community and needs hugs, looks and attention. Exceptions should only be made in emergencies and for specific school purposes. Lula emphasised that he himself had prohibited his ministers from attending meetings with their mobile phones because they were distracted by this, as is the case at school.
The bill was widely supported politically; many parents and pupils also spoke out in favour of it. A similar law was already passed last November by the state of São Paulo, the most populous in the country. Since 2023, several other states, such as Rio de Janeiro, Maranhão and Goiás, have also enacted similar laws at regional level. However, the authorities have had difficulties implementing them in practice. According to UNESCO, one in four countries has now restricted the use of smartphones in schools. •
