Reader’s letter
As the 19 May 2026 issue of Current Concerns (No 10) makes clear, the divide between the economy and democracy – which has existed since the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century – is in danger of becoming a chasm into which we could all plunge sooner rather than later. The fundamental human values of solidarity, freedom and equality are, in fact, increasingly falling victim to power-obsessed individuals who believe they must mask their inner poverty with outward military dummies. If the reputable media wish to fulfil their democratic responsibility, they must not only report to us, the voters, on this war machine, but also name the organisations that are working to dismantle it – and explain how we can support them.
